Unlike his comic counterpart, Lucas survives his separation from Dodge, which has no ill effect on him due to his status as an Echo. Dodge reveals that the Identity Key doesn't allow someone to assume the shape of a real person, and that she can only turn into Lucas because she was using his body at the time. Unlike "Gabe", which is one of the three forms that Dodge uses as her appearance, Lucas is actually a real person. However, as it is later revealed, both Lucas and Dodge returned, but Lucas remained under possession and unable to act until the Alpha Key set him free. When Ellie uses the Echo Key, Lucas apparently does not return, and it is just Dodge using his body.He was preceded by Howe first and Captain Frederick Gideon second. He is the third human known to become possessed by a demon from the other side of the Black Door, the fourth being Eden Hawkins.Crown of Shadows (Appearance used by Dodge).Ray of F*ing Sunshine (Appearance used by Dodge). After he was possessed by Dodge, however, Lucas was subsumed by the demon and his actions were compromised by Dodge, who used his memories and personality to stay two steps ahead of others based on Lucas's connections. However, Lucas was considered to be naive at times, at one point, he was accused of following Rendell blindly, and deferring to Ellie to the degree of overvaluing her. Duncan believed that he was humorous, altruistic, and benevolent, unlike his possessor. He was described by Ellie as being kind and charming in her eyes, much like how Nina Locke described Rendell. While little is seen of Lucas before he shared his body or after he experienced exorcism from the Alpha Key, numerous allusions have been made to his personality. When asked by Nina if she's heard from Lucas, Ellie admits that she doesn't expect to as Lucas needed to start fresh someplace else. Īt some point after his return, Lucas left to find a new life elsewhere. Lucas joined the others in returning to Keyhouse where he was finally reunited with Ellie. Lucas returned the keys that Dodge had in her possession when she died just before they received a call from Bode that Ellie had returned. As an Echo, Lucas could not be killed by physical means and as such, he survived the separation from the demoness. When Dodge was finally destroyed with the Alpha Key, the real Lucas unexpectedly emerged from the wreckage of Dodge's house, the key having separated Lucas from the demoness due to Ellie's earlier attempt to resurrect Lucas with the Echo Key bringing back both Lucas and Dodge. His body was also briefly possessed by the ghost of Sam Lesser, but he was soon repelled by Dodge's spirit. Lucas spent months trapped inside of his body, but he didn't have any control of it. This begins Dodge's campaign within Matheson and enmity with the Locke children. What she does not realize, however, is that she has actually brought forth the demon possessing Lucas when he died, using his body. Twenty-five years later, in a fit of desperation, Ellie uses the Echo Key to summon an echo of Lucas. The remaining Keepers tell Matheson that he - and those he killed - washed out to sea. Out of anger, he is forced to kill Kim and Jeff, and is eventually killed by Rendell. Lucas is initially fine, however begins exhibiting strange symptoms and eventually goes insane, demanding the keys from Rendell. When the original Keepers of the Keys use the keys to open the Black Door, Lucas is hit and becomes possessed by a demon from another world eventually this demon becomes known as Dodge.
